TechCrunch has a new owner.
Regent has just acquired TechCrunch from Yahoo, following their acquisition of Foundry earlier this week.
In a post explaining the acquisition, TechCrunch‘s Connie Loizos wrote: “Regent is acquiring an iconic brand. TechCrunch isn’t just a tech news site; it’s the most influential voice chronicling innovation in Silicon Valley and beyond.”
This brings together two publishers known for high-impact technology journalism under one ownership umbrella:
📱TechCrunch: The leading authority on startups, tech companies, and entrepreneurs worldwide since 2005
📱Foundry: Home to PCWorld, Macworld, InfoWorld, CIO, TechAdvisor, and other influential tech publications
So what does this mean for PR and media?
First, there’s the prospect of expanded reach. This consolidation may create new opportunities to reach diverse tech audiences through a single media relationship. A story in TechCrunch could be seen in PCWorld, InfoWorld, and TechAdvisor.
Secondly, there are potential cross-platform opportunities. I would not be surprised if we saw the potential for cross-publication content strategies across these influential platforms.
But for now, I would expect not to see much change.
Connie did her best to express “there’s nothing to see here, folks” when she wrote: “As close followers of TechCrunch already know, this isn’t our first rodeo when it comes to new ownership (we all still have swag from AOL and Verizon). But what mattered most in this transition was ensuring that our team retains the freedom and support to do what we do best. With Regent, we have exactly that.”
Considering the media market, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw similar acquisition stories in the weeks and months to come.
