Bospar PR: Who Is the Enemy of the People?

New Survey Finds that President Donald Trump Is the Number 1 Choice; Only 11 Percent Believe the Press Is the Enemy of the People

SAN FRANCISCO — August 7, 2018 — Bospar, the boutique PR firm that puts tech companies on the map, has today released the findings of its “Enemy of the People” study, which looked at how Americans feel about the press after President Donald Trump declared them “the enemy of the people.”

As recently as August 5, President Trump tweeted: “The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it’s TRUE. I am providing a great service by explaining this to the American People. They purposely cause great division & distrust. They can also cause War! They are very dangerous & sick!”

However, according to the poll of more than 1,000 U.S. adults from Bospar and Propeller Insights, only 11 percent agree with the president and believe the press is the enemy of the people.

In fact, President Donald Trump himself was Americans’ first choice for “enemy of the people,” followed closely by the belief that there is no enemy of the people. Russian President Vladimir Putin came in third, followed by Hillary Clinton at 12 percent. Only 2 percent of Americans think special counsel Robert Mueller is the enemy of the people.

“As a former journalist I take exception to the idea that the American media could somehow be construed as an ‘enemy of the people,’” said Bospar principal Curtis Sparrer. “Our research shows that most Americans think the guy throwing around the moniker, Donald Trump, is the true so-called ‘enemy of the people.’ However, I believe the term belongs in an Ibsen play, not American politics.”

The survey was conducted between August 2 and August 3, right after CNN’s chief White House correspondent, Jim Acosta, challenged Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to rebut President Trump’s claim that the American press is the “enemy of the people.” She would not. The exchange took place hours after Ivanka Trump told a journalist that she does not believe that the media is the enemy, in clear contrast to her father.

Americans gave a slightly different answer when asked how much they agreed or disagreed with the statement: “The press is the enemy of the people.” Here’s the breakdown:

• 15 percent – Strongly agreed
• 21 percent – Agree
• 30 percent – Neither agree nor disagree
• 15 percent – Disagree
• 19 percent – Strongly disagree

Furthermore, 66 percent of Americans share the president’s view that the press distributes “fake news.” Only 34 percent disagreed.
